Bruce G Avery born 1949 in Tewkesbury, Gloucestershire the middle son of a family of 5 children. My elder brother was the one thought of as the Artist so I used to do my own thing. Largely self taught I remember enjoying art at senior school, Tewkesbury County Secondary School, so much so that I took Art as one of my 3 exams in my final year, the others being English and Maths. Many years passed before taking up art seriously. Encouraged by a friend I reacquainted myself with the disciplines of watercolour under the guidance of Marion Elms a wonderful person and teacher. Marion opened my eyes to the possibilities of colour and how to use colour. I was encouraged to try Pastels, “pigment in stick form”, a wonderful immediate medium with endless possibilities and combinations. I attended workshops with Barry Watkins and Jackie Simmonds. In my quest for richer colour I turned to Acrylic. Acrylic emulsion is a very versatile medium, applied with brush or pallet knife, straight from the tube for that thick bulky effect, diluted with water to give thin transparent washes or mixed with Acrylic Mediums to give body and texture.

Before moving to Cornwall in October 2002 my home was in Bishops Cleeve Nr Cheltenham, Gloucestershire. I was a member of the Cheltenham Art Club and The Cotswold Art Club where I exhibited at various locations around the county including the Cheltenham Art Gallery and the Festival of Arts open air exhibition held annually in the Imperial Gardens in Cheltenham.

I have been greatly influenced in my paintings by the late G. John. Blockley his use of colour and texture when producing his paintings was in my opinion both refreshing and at times breathtaking and I continue to study his works and view them as a constant source of inspiration.

As an extension of inspiration I was talking to a Healer/Psychic friend of mine who asked to see one of my paintings, she was amazed to “see” lots of faces both human and animal, I asked her whether it had any meaning and was told that it means that “spirit” is working through me and in time would show themselves to me. It would be easy to dismiss my friends observations but the more I look at my paintings the more I see.

I have successfully sold my work to clients in London and Dorking as well as sales at the various exhibitions in Gloucestershire, now I feel the time is right to reach a wider public through the internet.
